JLPT N5 self-study is a fully possible goal. However, even though N5 is an entry level, you will get stuck quickly if you memorize words or solve questions without order. Because scripts, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening are all at the basic stage, a small stable routine matters from the beginning.

This guide explains N5 study methods, study order, textbook use, exam-style practice, and pace management for learners starting Japanese alone. It is best to read the exam structure and passing criteria in JLPT N5 overview first.

Where self-study gets stuck

The most common problem is that study starts with interest but slows down when scripts and grammar appear together. You may think you memorized hiragana and katakana, but reading questions still takes time. You may know word meanings, yet the sentence becomes confusing once particles are attached.

Another problem is delaying listening. Beginners often recognize expressions in writing but cannot catch them immediately by sound. Listening is hard to improve all at once right before the exam, so short daily exposure from the start is safer.

The passing criteria should shape your plan. N5 requires an စုစုပေါင်း 80 or higher, at least 38 in Language Knowledge + Reading, and at least 19 in Listening. Scoring is two sections: 120 points for Language Knowledge + Reading and 60 points for Listening. A broad routine is better than studying only one side.

Study order

The first stage is scripts. Hiragana and katakana should be fast enough to read questions and examples, not merely memorized. Do not try to finish everything in one day; read and write short words repeatedly. Katakana appears often in loanwords, so do not postpone it.

The second stage is basic vocabulary and short examples. N5 vocabulary is commonly estimated at ခန့်မှန်း 800 စကားလုံး, but this is a official list မရှိ / estimate figure. Divide words by daily-life themes and read examples aloud. More detail is in JLPT N5 ဝေါဟာရ.

The third stage is grammar. Start with noun sentences, adjective sentences, verb sentences, particles, tense, questions, and requests. N5 grammar is commonly estimated at ခန့်မှန်း 80~100 patterns, but again this is official list မရှိ / estimate. Understanding short sentences accurately matters more than filling a pattern count.

The fourth stage is reading and listening in parallel. In reading, mark who, when, where, and what happens. In listening, practice catching time, place, people, and actions from short conversations. For grammar detail, use JLPT N5 သဒ္ဒါ.

Using books and apps together

For self-study, roles matter more than quantity. Start with one comprehensive textbook to build scripts, basic grammar, and short reading. Add a vocabulary book and a past-exam-style practice book. Detailed selection criteria are in JLPT N5 စာအုပ်.

Prioritize review over progress. After finishing a lesson, check words, grammar, examples, and short questions before moving on. Beginners can lose script reading speed and forms after only one day. Without review intervals, finishing a book does not guarantee recall in real questions.

An app is useful for automating short review. Repeating words and patterns during breaks or travel time reduces the burden of self-study. Use books for explanation and the app for repetition.

Weekly routine and pace

On weekdays, short and frequent study works well. If you have 40 minutes, you can divide it into 15 minutes vocabulary, 10 minutes grammar, 10 minutes listening, and 5 minutes review. If time is shorter, keep vocabulary and listening daily and rotate grammar and reading every other day.

On weekends, place longer study. Confirm weekday words and grammar through short reading, and listen to one set as a flow. About once a month, solve official sample questions or exam-style questions with a timer. See JLPT N5 မေးခွန်းဟောင်း.

The 2026 JLPT test dates are the first test on 2026-07-06 and the second test on 2026-12-07. Actual application and test-site information must be checked through the official notice for your region. Use JLPT exam schedule and JLPT application guide.

Mock tests and wrong answers

A mock test checks whether your study works in the exam format; it does not create ability by itself. If you take too many too early, errors pile up and direction becomes unclear. After one pass through basic scripts and grammar, try a timed set.

Wrong-answer notes should be short and specific. Instead of grammar error, write verb past form, を and で, or time expression in listening. Reviewing yesterday's errors for five minutes before starting new study is effective. Near the exam, reduce weak areas rather than adding many new topics.

DAYLAB N5 app

The DAYLAB JLPT app automatically manages the review intervals self-learners often miss. Vocabulary, grammar, kanji, and listening are not treated as isolated memorization; FSRS spaced repetition adjusts when to see them again. You can check the app on the home.

FAQ

Q. How many months should I plan for JLPT N5 self-study?
A. It depends on your current script knowledge and daily study time, but beginners should plan in months and build scripts, words, grammar, and listening steadily.

Q. Should I study vocabulary or grammar first?
A. Study them in parallel. Keep vocabulary short and daily, and learn grammar from basic sentence structures with examples.

Q. When should I start listening?
A. Start short listening from the beginning. Written recognition and sound recognition are different skills.

Q. When should I take an N5 mock test?
A. After one pass through scripts and basic grammar. Too early, it can create burden rather than useful analysis.
